HUGS AND KISSES, XOXO

Today we are seeing reports across the media that “hugging and kissing” will be permitted in Step 3, starting from 17th May.

For the last 14 months we have heard directly from MP’s, Ministers, BEIS, PHE and Cabinet Office that weddings have been severely restricted and offered no parity with other hospitality settings and live events because “there is alcohol and everyone is hugging and kissing”.

With just ONE week to go, we are STILL awaiting updated guidance for wedding receptions in Step 3. We have had no indication from the government that numbers will increase beyond the limit of 30, despite the removal of limits to guest numbers for funerals, the continued success of the vaccine programme, and the downgrading of the UK alert level today.

All of this is with regular, urgent and consistent lobbying and pressure across multiple campaign groups, individuals, organisations and associations within the industry.

Weddings are still restricted far more severely than any other part of the economy, alongside nightclubs. There has been no recognition of the societal and cultural importance of traditional celebrations around marriage. There is still no targeted support for the hundreds of thousands of businesses and workers who have been forced to close in all but name for over a year.

More than 400,000 workers and over 500,000 couples are being ignored. Again.

Ahead of the PM’s press conference at 5pm today, we would like you all to please take one minute to tag your MP and tweet your frustrations about the situation using the hashtag #whataboutweddings

What do we want?

PARITY – with other parts of the hospitality and live events industry from Step 3

PRIORITY – in full reopening without any restrictions from 21st June

PROTECTION – by giving targeted financial support to businesses and ensuring couples can access insurance with a government backed fund.

The only way to be heard is to SPEAK UP. Stand up for friends, colleagues, family and those who are impacted. #standupforweddings

XOXO
